The value and importance of effective communication skills as a professional trainer are explored in module five. Several common barriers to effective communication are discussed, along with the cornerstones of effective communication, how to effectively lead discussions and an introduction to Kirkpatrick's ‘Levels of Evaluation’.
Module 6 – Dealing with Difficult Situations
Module six provides helpful guidelines for effectively dealing with difficult situations and individuals. The inevitability of complexities and challenges (both inside and outside a formal workshop setting) is discussed, along with how adequate preparation and anticipation can make it easier to deal with most everyday challenges.
Module 7 – Presentation Skills for Trainers
The seventh module focuses on the development and advancement of presentation skills, outlining the important differences between ‘telling’ and ‘showing’. Several helpful tips for overcoming nervousness are also provided, along with the importance of considering nonverbal communication, the role of personal appearance and the use of effective visuals.
Module 8 – Using Activities to Make Training Fun
Candidates are then introduced to the various different types of games and activities that can boost the effectiveness of a workshop or training session. The potential benefits of humour are also discussed, along with how to deal with reluctant trainees, the importance of participation and how to effectively break the ice to get a workshop underway.
Module 9 – Developing Creativity
In module nine, candidates learn how to inspire creativity and work with a series of helpful problem-solving tools. The concepts of brainstorming and mind-mapping are discussed in depth, along with the use of metaphors and analogies, the ‘nine intelligences’ and the key to encouraging creativity in a team.
Module 10 – Conflict Resolution Techniques
Concluding the course, module 10 introduces candidates to a series of essential conflict resolution techniques for the professional trainer. The importance of empathy is discussed in depth, along with the ‘Three Fs’ of conflict resolution, tips for dealing with negative feelings and additional stress management techniques.
